The Beginnings - Stockman House

The first home I visited that was designed by Frank Lloyd Wright was the Mason City, Iowa Stockman House. Ever since, I've been intrigued by the brilliance of his architecture. Having just come back from a trip to Wisconsin, I'm inclined to share my experiences....starting way back at the beginning in 2005.

The very first thing I learned was to be satisfied with exterior photos most of the time. It's rare that an owner of a FLW property will allow interior photos. The reasoning may be they are afraid people will steal furniture design, or people won't visit the homes if they can see photos online?.....I don't know. Fact is a google search will render plenty of interior photos, so I don't see this as a problem anyway. People will come, and photos only encourage it in my opinion, not discourage. More likely, the tour guides don't want the distraction of people taking photos, or the distraction of tourists not paying attention looking through the lens of the camera, possibly knocking over a priceless treasure. Either way, that's the way it is, so it's something one gets used to when touring a FLW building.

The Stockman house was built from adapted plans of an April 1905 Ladies Home Journal article. Other websites have noted the plan being from a 1907 Ladies Home Journal.
