Designed in 1940, and finished in 1942, the Community Christian Church is open to the public and allows interior photography. More information about the Frank Lloyd Wright design can be found here. The design included quite a large amount of compromise with the city and client, unusual for a Wright design.
According to an article written by Donald Hoffman for the Kansas City Star, May 4, 1986, Wright wanted the outer walls to be stained a rose color offset by copper trim along the roof edges and on the dome. The original rose stain came out uneven and blotchy and looked terrible, especially after a rain. The contractor responsible for painting the building white received a letter from Mr. Wright expressing his disapproval.
In the last photo, the square building protruding from the Hexagon section houses the additions that were not part of the original FLW design (chapel and fellowship hall). I had driven past this building several times in my lifetime, not knowing it was a FLW design. They were having a rummage sale the day we visited.
